Man of La Mancha. I liked the movie. I liked the written play. I had a hard time envisioning how to blend the two into a stage production, especially in a church…on a very small stage. I needn’t have worried…it worked and worked well. For those of you not knowing the wherewithal of the play, here’s a brief synopsis. Miguel Cervantes and his manservant are thrown into prison because in order to make ends meet, Cervantes the poet and actor has been serving as tax collector and foreclosed on a church. While waiting his inquisition to take place, his fellow prisoners put him on trial themselves. He presents his defense in the manner of a series of vignettes featuring some of the key scenes in the book “Don Quixote”.
The entire cast was great, but I’m just going to briefly focus on the three main characters – Lane as Miguel Cervantes/Alonso Quijana, Jerry Winsett as his manservant/Sancho Panza, and Christina Spitters as Aldonza/Dulcinea. Jerry was comical since Sancho is a funny character with all the amusing songs, but when Alonso died near the end of the play within a play, he stood at the edge of the stage and truly let you feel his grief of losing his best friend. Christina is not only a fabulous actress and a beautiful woman, but lordy does that girl have a set of lungs on her. I’ve head her sing at TSF, but nothing like this. If she’s not operatically trained, I’d be surprised.
Lane however, floored me. Only used to his pop singing (I missed Sweeny Todd and My Fair Lady), the first time he opened up to sing “I Am I, Don Quixote”, my jaw dropped to the foundation. The man has an amazing Broadway-style singing voice, full, and rich, and saturated with emotion. He truly blew me away and I’d honestly love to have a recording of the play, the music was that good. I’ll not be missing any more performances where music is involved. You shouldn’t either.
